Ostrich Fern
Matteuccia struthiopteris
Ostrich fern is a dramatic deciduous fern that brings a lush, woodland character to moist gardens. Its tall, vase-shaped fronds emerge fresh green in spring and gradually form dense colonies where conditions are right. It is especially well suited to low areas, streamside plantings, and gardens with rich, consistently moist soil.
Size at maturity: 3–6' tall, 2–4' wide
Light: Part shade to full shade
Water: Medium to wet moisture; prefers consistently moist soil
Bloom time: Non-flowering fern; foliage emerges in spring
Wildlife: Provides cover and habitat for insects and small wildlife
Special features & uses: Edible young fiddleheads when properly identified and prepared; spreads naturally; excellent for moist woodland gardens
Plant with: Red-twig dogwood and common rush for a moist, naturalized planting, or lady fern for a lush fern garden.
Perfect for rain gardens, wet woodland edges, streamside plantings, and other cool, moist areas. Give it room to spread and let it create a natural fern colony.
