Prunella vulgaris
Self heal is a hardy, low-growing perennial with purple flower spikes that bloom from late spring through summer. Traditionally valued as a medicinal herb, its name comes from centuries of use in herbal remedies. In the garden, it’s a favorite of native bees, butterflies, and other beneficial insects, and it makes an attractive, easy-care groundcover in sunny to lightly shaded spots.
Size at maturity: 4–12" tall, 12–18" wide
Light: Full sun to part shade
Water: Medium moisture; tolerates seasonal dryness once established
Bloom time: May–August
Wildlife: Attracts bees, butterflies, and other pollinators; supports beneficial insects
Special features & uses: Edible young leaves and flowers; long history in herbalism for teas and salves; drought-tolerant; deer-resistant
Perfect for pollinator gardens, borders, and naturalized areas. Allow it to self-sow for a soft, flowering groundcover that returns year after year.
