Vine Maple
Acer circinatum
Vine maple is one of the Pacific Northwest’s most beautiful native understory trees. Its gracefully arching branches and distinctive palmate leaves create a soft, woodland character, while brilliant fall color adds seasonal interest. It works equally well as a multi-stemmed shrub or small tree and provides valuable structure and habitat beneath larger trees.
Size at maturity: 15–25' tall, 10–20' wide
Light: Part shade to shade; tolerates sun with adequate moisture
Water: Medium moisture; prefers moist, well-drained soil
Bloom time: April–June
Wildlife: Flowers provide resources for pollinators; seeds feed birds and wildlife; branches provide cover
Special features & uses: Brilliant fall color; excellent understory tree; adaptable form; native woodland plant
Plant with: Sword fern, lady fern, and Tolmeia for a layered woodland floor, or snowberry and red elderberry for a larger native understory habitat.
Perfect for woodland gardens, shaded yards, rain gardens, and beneath larger trees. Allow its naturally arching form to develop for a relaxed woodland aesthetic.
